I have always loved the work of Eric Foner. I first came across Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men and Reconstruction as an undergrad. Steven Deyle, who was then at UC Davis, my alma mater, introduced me to the work of Foner, in part, Foner was Deyle's advisor at Columbia. Then in my master's program, I came across one of the early editions of Give Me Liberty! and have used this amazing textbook in my classroom ever since. Here is a recent appearance on Democracy Now with Amy Goodman.
